GNU
Project - A Quest For Intellectual Freedom
Free Software or Open
Source is a concept which is gaining momentum. The idea is to make software
available free along with the source code. It gives the user full flexibility
to customize or develop on the existing programs. This prevents the "Re-Invention
Of The Wheel" which we all get into mainly due to the non availability
of source code or licensing restrictions. The opening of source code to
users encourages them to add or refine functionality's. This leads to continuous
improvement. A lot of development projects are hosted on SourceForge
and many other web sites. For a more authentic description of the FSF/GNU
ideas, please visit Mr.Richard Stallman's
web page.
The best editor I have used, EMACS - Well, what more can I say, use and figure it out for yourself. This is more than just an editor. For me, it has opened a whole new horizon. Emacs is so flexible and powerful, it yeilds itself to the most specific and unique customization. For once you do not have to be a slave to the editor! For begginners, the customization can be done through the build in UI. For programming buffs, Elisp a variant of LISP is the language used. For the X11 feel with more graphics and jazz, also look at XEmacs.
Elisp resources on the web - This web page has the most extensive collection of Elisp resources.
